Origins
Jordan Jenks came up in South Carolina, studied audio engineering, and spent time working at Epic Records in New York before moving toward Atlanta's scene.
Magnolia
Playboi Carti's 2017 single is the record that made him. The pairing of Carti's minimal, ad-lib-driven delivery with Bourne's bright, bouncing production created a template that a very large number of artists then copied.
Die Lit
He produced the majority of Carti's 2018 album, which is the fullest statement of the partnership and is regularly cited as one of the most influential rap albums of its decade despite modest chart performance at the time.
The tag
"Yo Pi'erre, you wanna come out here?" is sampled from an episode of The Jamie Foxx Show and is among the most recognisable tags in rap. Producers rank it consistently in the top handful.
What his production sounds like
Bright, melodic, slightly unreal — synth tones closer to video game music than to soul samples, over trap drums. It is deliberately playful in a genre that mostly is not.
His own albums
He raps as well as produces and has released several albums under his own name, including the The Life of Pi'erre series. The reception is mixed; the production is not in question.
Working at Epic
He spent time as an engineer at Epic Records in New York before his own production career took off, which gave him a technical grounding most self-taught beatmakers lack. He engineers and mixes his own work.
Young Nudy
The Sli'merre project in 2019 is among his strongest sustained work and is often preferred by listeners to the Carti records that made him famous. The pairing with Nudy's flatter delivery gives the production more room to be heard.
The Carti split
The two separated for a period after Die Lit over what both described in vague terms, and Carti's Whole Lotta Red was made largely without him. The reception to that album — divisive on release, revered since — became part of an ongoing argument about how much of the sound was Bourne's.
What the imitators got wrong
An enormous number of producers copied the bright synth palette and got nothing like the same result, because the actual craft is in the drum programming and the space between elements rather than the tone selection.
Standing
He is among the most influential producers of the last decade on the sound of rap made by people under thirty, and remains relatively unknown outside it. Tay Keith and others rank his tag among the best in the business.
