Zaytoven

A church organist who became the primary architect of Atlanta trap, working faster than almost anyone in the business.

Early life and origins

Xavier Dotson was born in Germany to a military family and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he played organ in his father's church. That background is audible in everything he makes — the melodic figures are church figures, transplanted.

Moving to Atlanta

He relocated to Atlanta and began working out of a basement studio, where he met a young Gucci Mane. The partnership that followed is one of the most productive in rap and effectively created a subgenre.

Gucci Mane

He produced the bulk of Gucci's early catalogue across an enormous number of mixtapes, at a pace that meant records reached the streets within days of being made. The volume and the speed were the point, and they defined how Atlanta rap was distributed for a decade.

What his production sounds like

Bright, fast, keyboard-led melodies over hard trap drums — the opposite of the dark, cinematic register Metro Boomin works in. He builds beats in minutes rather than hours and has said repeatedly that overthinking ruins them.

Migos and the wider roster

"Versace" is his, and the Migos records that followed helped make the triplet flow a national default. He has also worked with Future, Usher, Nicki Minaj and much of the Quality Control roster, and appears on NBA YoungBoy records.

The barber shop

He worked as a barber for years while producing, and has said he kept the job long after the music could have supported him. It is a recurring detail in how Atlanta talks about him — the producer who stayed local.

Legacy

Trap has two foundational production templates: the dark, orchestral one and the bright, melodic one. Zaytoven built the second, and the melodic strain running through everything from Migos to modern Atlanta comes back to a church organ in the Bay Area.

The speed

He has said repeatedly that a beat should take minutes, not hours, and that labouring over one drains it. He works largely on keyboard in real time rather than programming, which is why the melodies sound played rather than constructed.

Gucci Mane's catalogue

The number of Gucci tracks he produced runs into the hundreds across a decade of mixtapes. That volume, released almost as fast as it was recorded, built the distribution culture Atlanta rap still runs on.

Beast Mode

The 2015 mixtape with Future, produced entirely by him, is among the most admired projects either has been involved in. A sole-producer project was a break from how both normally work and the result is unusually coherent.

The church connection

He still plays organ in church, and the harmonic vocabulary in his beats — the specific chord movements, the bright major figures over minor drums — comes directly from that. Trap's melodic strain has a gospel origin that is rarely acknowledged.

Teaching and legacy

He has run production workshops and been open about his technique in a genre where producers usually guard it. The generation of Atlanta beatmakers who followed learned from material he published deliberately.
