Mike Dean

The engineer, mixer and synth player whose fingerprints are on Rap-A-Lot and on almost everything Kanye West has released.

Rap-A-Lot

Dean started as the house engineer at Rap-A-Lot in Houston, working on Geto Boys, Scarface, UGK and Devin the Dude records through the 1990s. That period is where he learned to mix rap for low end, and it is why Houston producers still talk about him as one of their own.

Moving to Kanye West

He became central to West's work from 808s & Heartbreak onward and has been involved in essentially everything since — mixing, mastering, playing synths and often functioning as the person who finishes the record. On My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy his role was closer to musical director than engineer.

What he actually does

The credit "mixed by Mike Dean" understates it. He plays keyboards and guitar, writes arrangements, and is regularly the last person to touch a record before it ships. Artists hire him because he can take a session that is not working and finish it.

The synth sound

The huge, saturated analogue synth lines across Travis Scott's and The Weeknd's records are largely his. He is one of very few people in rap working primarily as an instrumentalist rather than a sample-based producer.

Notable credits

Scarface's The Diary, UGK's Ridin' Dirty, Kanye West's 808s, MBDTF, Yeezus and Donda, Travis Scott's Astroworld and Utopia, The Weeknd's After Hours, plus work with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Selena Gomez and Metro Boomin.

His own records

He has released instrumental and ambient synth albums under his own name, which sound almost nothing like the rap he is known for and which he appears to regard as the actual work.

Standing

Among engineers he is a reference point; among general audiences he is mostly unknown. His career spans from Fifth Ward Houston in 1990 to stadium pop in the 2020s without an obvious break, which almost nobody else in the field can claim.

The Houston years in detail

Through the 1990s he engineered and produced across the Rap-A-Lot catalogue, and his work on Scarface's records in particular established how Southern rap could sound expensive without losing its weight. UGK's Ridin' Dirty carries his fingerprints throughout.

Yeezus and Donda

Yeezus in 2013 was stripped down and abrasive in a way that required as much engineering discipline as the maximalism of MBDTF. On Donda he was again central, and the album's extremely long production process is one he has discussed publicly.

The live shows

He performs live synth sets, has toured with Travis Scott and others as part of the show rather than behind it, and streams sessions. Very few engineers of his generation have built a public-facing presence at all.

Working across genres

Rap, R&B, pop and ambient. His credits run from Fifth Ward Houston in 1990 to stadium-scale pop in the 2020s with no visible break, and he is routinely the connective tissue between artists who otherwise have nothing in common.

Reputation among producers

The phrase producers use about him is that he finishes records. A session that has stalled goes to Mike Dean, and it comes back done. That is a different skill from making beats and considerably rarer.
