Mustard

The producer who made West Coast rap dominate radio again, twice, ten years apart.

Early life and origins

Dijon McFarlane grew up in Los Angeles and started as a DJ, which shows in how his records are built — everything is arranged for a room rather than for headphones.

The ratchet sound

Sparse drums, a single repeated synth figure, enormous space and a bounce that sits somewhere between hyphy and DJ Quik. Between roughly 2012 and 2015 it was the dominant sound on American radio, and almost every pop and R&B record of the period borrowed from it.

YG and My Krazy Life

He produced almost all of YG's 2014 debut, which is regularly named among the strongest West Coast albums since the 1990s. That partnership is the clearest single statement of what the style could do across a full album rather than a single.

The tag

"Mustard on the beat, ho" is one of the earliest producer tags to become a cultural catchphrase in its own right, and it is credited with helping normalise tags as branding across the industry.

Not Like Us

He produced Kendrick Lamar's 2024 record, which became one of the largest songs of the decade and won Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys. Having a career-defining moment eleven years after your first one is close to unheard of for a producer.

The DJ background

He started DJing at parties as a teenager, and it explains the construction of his records: everything is built around what makes a room move, with almost no ornamentation. The sparseness is a functional decision rather than an aesthetic one.

The 2012 to 2015 run

"Rack City" for Tyga, "I'm Different" for 2 Chainz, "Show Me" for Kid Ink, "My Nigga" for YG. For roughly three years his sound was inescapable on American radio and was being imitated across pop and R&B.

10 Summers

His label and album series gave him a platform beyond production credits, and he has released several projects under his own name gathering the artists he works with.

The split from YG and the reunion

The pair separated after My Krazy Life, and both careers were weaker for it — YG's next records reached for other producers, and Mustard's best work had always had a voice attached. They reunited later, which listeners generally treated as a correction.

Not Like Us and the second peak

Producing the biggest rap record of 2024 and taking Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys placed him back at the centre a decade after the ratchet era. Producers rarely get a second peak; getting one on a record that size is close to unique.
