Background
Gaulden had released eight mixtapes independently before this, built a regional following, and served a six-month sentence that interrupted his momentum in 2016. He signed with Atlantic Records and Artist Partner Group in 2017, and Until Death Call My Name was the first proper album to come out of that deal.
Singles and reception
"Outside Today" arrived in January 2018, months ahead of the album, and became his first top-forty entry on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 31. It was later certified quadruple platinum and remains the song most casual listeners know him by. "Diamond Teeth Samurai" followed and reached number 59, and "Villain" was issued in June. The album itself entered the Billboard 200 top ten and was later certified double platinum.
What the album sounds like
Melodic, aggressive and unpolished in a way the later Motown records are not. The production is dense but the songs are short, and the writing is almost entirely first-person and situational. It is the clearest statement of the style he built the rest of the decade on.
The Reloaded edition
An extended version added roughly eighteen minutes of material, taking the album past fifty-eight minutes. Reissuing an album months after release with substantial new content became a standard move for him afterwards.
Where it sits in the catalogue
It is the only album made entirely inside the Atlantic system before the mixtape volume took over, and it is the most conventionally structured record he has released. Listeners who find the later ninety-minute albums overwhelming generally start here.
