Background
2020 was the most commercially dominant year of his career. He released multiple mixtapes that charted high, then closed the year with Top, which went to number one. He also released the collaborative project Nobody Safe with Rich the Kid in the same period.
Reception
Reaching number one confirmed something the streaming numbers had already implied: he had built one of the largest and most consistent audiences in rap without radio support, mainstream press interest or the touring career most artists rely on. The album is often cited as the commercial peak of his Atlantic years.
What the album sounds like
Broader than the debut, with more guests and more attempts at conventional song structure. The reception among long-term listeners was mixed for exactly that reason.
The 2020 run
Top closed a year in which he released multiple projects that charted high, including 38 Baby 2 and Until I Return, plus the collaborative Nobody Safe with Rich the Kid. Four charting releases in twelve months is a schedule no label would design.
The guests
Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne both appear across the twenty-one tracks, which was a deliberate move toward the mainstream after two years of largely feature-free releases.
Reception
Reaching number one confirmed that an artist with almost no radio play, press coverage or touring could top the chart on streaming alone. That was still a novel proposition in 2020.
