Founding

Kevin "Coach K" Lee and Pierre "Pee" Thomas founded Quality Control in March 2013. Coach K had managed both Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane early in their careers, which gave the label instant credibility in Atlanta. Pee had a studio; Coach K had the artists.

Building it in-house

They spent roughly a million dollars and a year building a headquarters on Atlanta's west side containing four studios and office space, hired their own radio and promotions staff, and ran publishing and management themselves. The stated principle was that everything happens in-house.

Migos

The label was effectively built around Migos, whose triplet flow became the dominant cadence in American rap for several years. City Girls, Lil Yachty and Lil Baby followed, and the Control the Streets compilations gathered the roster.

The major partnership

A joint venture with Universal's Capitol Music Group and Motown was announced in 2015, and Motown has handled distribution since.

The Hybe acquisition

In February 2023 QC Media Holdings was acquired by Scooter Braun's Hybe America for three hundred million dollars, with the founders retaining operational control. It is among the largest sums paid for an independent rap label.

Disputes

Migos sued the company in 2020, and the group's later disintegration and Takeoff's death in 2022 marked the end of the era the label was built on.

Coach K's background

Kevin Lee managed Young Jeezy and then Gucci Mane at the start of both careers, which in Atlanta terms is close to a founding credential. He brought relationships; Pierre Thomas brought the studio and the capital. The division of labour was clear from the beginning.

The triplet flow

Migos's cadence — three syllables per beat, repeated — became so widespread between 2016 and 2019 that it was audible on pop and country records. Very few labels can point to a rhythmic pattern as their commercial legacy.

Lil Baby

Signed after a prison sentence and with no prior recording history, he became one of the biggest artists in America within three years. He is the clearest evidence that the label's talent identification was not a one-off with Migos.

Quality Control Sports and beyond

Lee and Thomas launched a sports management arm in 2019 and expanded into management representing artists outside the label, including Cardi B. The Hybe acquisition valued that whole apparatus rather than just the recordings.

Takeoff

Takeoff was shot and killed in Houston in November 2022. Migos had already fractured, and his death ended any possibility of the group reforming. It is the hardest event in the label's history.
