Founding
Death Row was formed in 1991 by Marion "Suge" Knight and Dr. Dre, following Dre's acrimonious departure from Eazy-E's Ruthless Records. The circumstances of that exit have been disputed and litigated for thirty years.
The Chronic and Doggystyle
The Chronic arrived in 1992 and defined West Coast rap for the decade. Doggystyle followed in 1993 and introduced Snoop Dogg as a star. Between them they established G-funk as the dominant commercial sound in American rap and made the label enormously profitable in under two years.
2Pac
Knight posted Shakur's bail in 1995 and signed him. All Eyez on Me followed in 1996 and became the label's biggest release. Shakur was killed in Las Vegas in September of that year, and the label never recovered its momentum.
The collapse
Dre left in 1996 to found Aftermath. Snoop left afterwards. Knight was imprisoned. The label went through bankruptcy and a succession of owners, and its catalogue was fought over for years.
Snoop's purchase
Snoop Dogg acquired the label in 2022, thirty years after Doggystyle, which is one of the more unlikely resolutions in music business history.
Legacy
Its four-year peak produced more commercially and culturally significant rap than most labels manage across their entire existence, and its disintegration became the cautionary example every artist-run label has cited since.
The Ruthless dispute
Dre's exit from Eazy-E's label to form Death Row involved Suge Knight and has been described in accounts ranging from hard negotiation to outright intimidation. It was litigated, dramatised in Straight Outta Compton and has never been fully settled as a matter of record.
The sound
G-funk — slow tempos, live-feeling bass, Parliament and Funkadelic sample logic, a whining synth lead — was Dre's design and it dominated American radio for most of the decade. Every West Coast label that followed was working against or within a template Death Row set.
The East Coast conflict
The label's public feud with Bad Boy Records ran through interviews, awards shows and records, and is inseparable from the deaths of both Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. within six months of each other. Neither case has produced a conviction.
The catalogue
Ownership of the masters passed through bankruptcy proceedings and multiple buyers over two decades, and for long periods the records were difficult to license or stream. Snoop's 2022 purchase returned them to someone who actually made them.
