Founding
Percy Miller started with a record store in Richmond, California, funded from a malpractice settlement, and turned it into a label. He moved the operation to New Orleans, which put it at the centre of a scene the industry had barely noticed.
The Priority deal
Miller negotiated a distribution arrangement with Priority that left him an extraordinary share of the revenue and full ownership of his masters. It is still cited as one of the best deals any independent artist has extracted from a distributor, and it is the reason the label's volume translated into actual wealth.
The release schedule
No Limit released records at a pace that has never been matched — dozens a year at its peak, with the tank logo and Pen & Pixel's airbrushed covers functioning as a brand people bought on sight. Quality was inconsistent by design; the model was volume.
The roster
Silkk the Shocker, C-Murder, Mystikal, Mia X and Fiend anchored it, and signing Snoop Dogg after Death Row collapsed was the move that confirmed No Limit had displaced it commercially.
Decline
The output rate that built the label eventually saturated its own audience, and the operation wound down in the early 2000s. Miller moved into film, sports management and food businesses.
Legacy
Along with Cash Money it proved a Southern independent could out-earn the majors on their own terms, and the ownership-first argument Miller made in every interview has been repeated by artists ever since.
Pen & Pixel
The Houston design firm produced the airbrushed, diamond-encrusted album covers that made No Limit releases identifiable across a record shop. The visual identity did as much commercial work as the music, and it has since become one of the most imitated aesthetics in rap.
The tank
The tank logo functioned as a guarantee of contents in the same way a supermarket own-brand does. Buyers picked up records by artists they had never heard of because the logo was on them, which is an unusual thing for a rap label to have achieved.
Master P as executive
Miller took a No Limit release schedule of dozens of albums a year and made himself one of the highest-paid figures in entertainment on the back of it. He has been consistent for thirty years that ownership rather than fame is the point, and he said it before it was a standard rap talking point.
After the label
Miller moved into film, sports management, food products and briefly into professional basketball. His son Romeo had a parallel career. The family has remained visible long after the label's commercial peak ended.
