Cardi B
Belcalis Almánzar went from stripping in New York, to a reality television cast, to the first solo female rapper in nearly two decades to top the Billboard Hot 100, in roughly three years. The trajectory is the least plausible in modern rap and it happened almost entirely in public.
Early life and origins in the Bronx
She grew up in the Bronx, New York, to a Dominican father and a Trinidadian mother. She worked as a stripper in her late teens and has spoken about it plainly rather than defensively, framing it as the job that got her out of an abusive relationship and into financial independence.
How she got started
Instagram and Vine made her famous before any music did — she had a large following purely for being funny and unfiltered. That led to two seasons on Love & Hip Hop: New York, which she left in 2017 to record seriously.
Bodak Yellow and Invasion of Privacy
"Bodak Yellow" reached number one on the Hot 100 in 2017, making her the first solo female rapper to top the chart since Lauryn Hill in 1998. Invasion of Privacy followed in April 2018 and won Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys — she became the second woman to win the category, after Lauryn Hill, and the first to win it as a solo artist.
Notable songs
"Bodak Yellow", "I Like It" with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, "Money", "Up", and "WAP" with Megan Thee Stallion, which topped the Hot 100 in 2020 and generated a political news cycle disproportionate to a rap single.
The long gap
A second album took years. She released charting singles throughout without committing to a full project, and by 2026 the return was being covered as a comeback narrative in its own right. Whether the delay was perfectionism, label friction or simply life is something she has given several different answers about.
What she is known for
Delivery and personality more than technical construction. Her voice is instantly identifiable, her ad-libs are structural rather than decorative, and her public register — completely unfiltered, frequently funny — is inseparable from the records. She also presented Doechii with the Best Rap Album Grammy in 2025, passing on the award she had been the second woman ever to receive.
Before the music
Her Instagram and Vine following came first and was built on nothing but her being funny about her own life. That sequencing matters: she arrived with an audience that already knew her voice, which is why "Bodak Yellow" did not need a conventional radio campaign to travel.
Invasion of Privacy
Released in April 2018, it produced three Hot 100 number ones and made her the first female rapper with multiple chart-toppers from a debut. The Grammy for Best Rap Album at the 2019 ceremony made her the first solo woman to win the category — Lauryn Hill's 1999 win was for an album credited to her alone but she has generally been discussed alongside the Fugees.
WAP and the reaction
"WAP" with Megan Thee Stallion topped the Hot 100 in August 2020 and became a political story, denounced by American politicians and commentators in terms that had not been aimed at a rap record in roughly two decades. The Cop-Killer-shaped shape of that reaction, aimed at two women, is the clearest recent illustration of how differently explicit content is policed depending on who is performing it.
Business and public life
She has run large endorsement partnerships, appeared in the Fast & Furious franchise, and used a very large social following for direct political commentary, including a widely covered interview with a presidential candidate. She is one of the few rappers whose public register outside music is as visible as the music.
