What is chopped and screwed?

Updated 2026-09-02

A Houston DJ technique from the early 1990s that became one of the most widely copied production ideas in modern music.

The short answer

Chopped and screwed means slowing a record down substantially and cutting between two copies of it to stutter and repeat phrases. Slowing the tape lowers the pitch, so voices deepen and everything stretches. The chopping is the rhythmic edit; the screwing is the tempo drop.

Who invented it

DJ Screw, born Robert Earl Davis Jr., developed it in Houston's South Park in the early 1990s. He began slowing records because he preferred them that way, started selling the results as mixtapes out of his house, and ended up with queues down the street. His full profile is here.

How it is actually done

Traditionally on two turntables with the pitch fader pulled down, cutting between two copies of the same record to double a word or hold a phrase. Modern producers do it in software, which is faster and generally sounds thinner — the tape-based original has artefacts that the digital version does not.

Screwed versus chopped

They are two separate operations often described as one. A record can be screwed without being chopped, which is just a slow version. The chopping is what turns it into an arrangement rather than a speed change.

Why Houston

The technique is inseparable from the codeine culture it grew up alongside, which Houston artists have discussed with more honesty than most scenes manage about their own drugs. It also suited the city's car culture — music made for driving slowly in a customised car on a hot night. The Houston scene history is here.

The Screwed Up Click

The rappers who recorded freestyles over Screw's slowed instrumentals became the Screwed Up Click: Fat Pat, Big Moe, Lil' Keke, Big Pokey, E.S.G., Z-Ro and dozens more. The tapes were the scene's entire distribution network.

How far it travelled

OG Ron C and the Chopstars continued the practice after Screw's death in 2000. Beyond Houston, its tempo logic runs through a great deal of modern trap, its pitch-shifting shaped vaporwave and cloud rap wholesale, and artists with no connection to Texas routinely release chopped versions of their own records as a matter of course.

Where to start listening

3 'n the Mornin' is the best-known compilation. The numbered grey tapes are the real archive and are patchily available. Screwed Up Records and Tapes in Houston still operates.

The grey tapes

Screw's mixtapes were numbered rather than titled and sold from his house by the thousand. Rappers would come to record freestyles over the slowed instrumentals, and a verse landing on the right tape could start a career. The tapes were the distribution network for an entire scene, and several artists exist commercially because of one.

What it does to a voice

Dropping the tempo lowers pitch proportionally, so a rapper's voice descends into a register nobody actually has. It also stretches every consonant, which is why screwed vocals sound slurred. Modern software can slow tempo without changing pitch; that produces something quite different and generally worse.

Codeine

The technique grew up alongside promethazine and codeine cough syrup, and the music is designed to be heard in that state — everything already slowed to match. Houston artists have been unusually direct about this connection, and it has cost several of them their lives.

The modern version

Artists now release official chopped-and-screwed editions of their own albums as a standard extra. Don Toliver put out a remix EP with DJ Candlestick of the Chopstars in 2026. What was a bootleg practice is now a marketing format.
