How RIAA certifications actually work

Updated 2026-09-02

What gold, platinum and diamond mean in 2026, how streams count toward them, and what does not count at all.

The thresholds

CertificationUnits required
Gold500,000
Platinum1,000,000
Multi-Platinum2,000,000 and each million after
Diamond10,000,000

These apply to both albums and singles, counted in units rather than in physical copies.

How streams convert

For albums, 1,500 on-demand audio or video streams equal one album unit. Ten permanent track downloads from an album also equal one unit. For singles, 150 streams equal one track sale.

What does not count

International streams do not count — the RIAA credits United States activity only. Neither do TikTok views, YouTube Shorts, playlist adds, pre-saves or programmed radio streams. Only on-demand plays from approved services qualify.

Physical sales

Each CD, vinyl record or cassette sold counts as one unit, the same as a digital album purchase. Limited vinyl runs and merchandise-bundled sales can push a title over a threshold, which is why artists still press physical formats.

Shipped versus sold

An album shipped in quantities above a million to retailers can be certified platinum without every copy having sold to a customer. This is a legacy of the physical era and explains some certifications that look inconsistent with known sales.

Who checks

Labels and distributors submit data, Luminate compiles verified US activity, and independent auditors verify before an award is issued. Certification is not automatic — someone has to apply and pay a fee, which is why some older catalogue titles are under-certified.

Why certifications lag reality

Because they must be requested. An album can pass a threshold years before anyone files, and back-catalogue certifications are often issued in batches when a label decides to do the paperwork.

Other countries

Every market has its own body and its own thresholds. The UK's BPI, Music Canada, ARIA in Australia and the BVMI in Germany all use different numbers, scaled roughly to market size. A record can be platinum in one country and uncertified in another.

Why the numbers feel wrong

A gold single at 500,000 units means 75 million streams at the 150-per-unit rate. A gold album at 500,000 units means 750 million streams. Those figures sound enormous because they are — streaming volumes are much larger than sales volumes ever were, and the ratios were set to keep the awards meaningful.

Album versus single certifications

The thresholds are the same but the maths is not. Singles convert at 150 streams per unit, albums at 1,500. That is because an album unit is meant to represent a full listen across roughly ten tracks.

The Diamond problem

Ten million units was close to unattainable in the physical era and is considerably more reachable now. That has produced a wave of Diamond certifications for streaming-era records, which some people regard as devaluation and others as an accurate reflection of consumption.

Back catalogue

Older albums are systematically under-certified because certification requires an application and a fee. A label with no commercial reason to certify a thirty-year-old record simply does not, which is why some obviously successful albums carry no plaque at all.

Reading a certification correctly

A certification is a floor, not a figure. It tells you an album passed a threshold at some point, not what it has sold since. Comparing two records by their certifications tells you very little unless both were certified recently.

Frequently asked

How many streams is a gold record?

500,000 units. For an album that is 750 million on-demand streams at the RIAA's 1,500-streams-per-unit rate, or fewer if sales and downloads contribute.

How many streams equal one album sale?

1,500 on-demand audio or video streams equal one album unit for RIAA certification. For singles, 150 streams equal one track sale.

Do international streams count for RIAA?

No. The RIAA counts United States activity only. Other countries have their own certifying bodies with different thresholds.

What is diamond certification?

Ten million units. It is the highest standard RIAA award and very few rap albums have reached it.
