Ye
Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye in 2021, made a case for being the most important figure in twenty-first century popular music and then spent several years dismantling his own commercial standing. Both halves of that sentence are documented fact and neither cancels the other.
Early life and origins in Chicago
He was raised in Chicago's South Shore by his mother Donda West, an English professor who chaired the department at Chicago State University. He was producing beats as a teenager, and the relationship with his mother — her influence, and her death in 2007 — runs through his entire catalogue as the single most consistent theme in it.
Producing before rapping
He built his reputation entirely behind the board, producing for Jay-Z's The Blueprint in 2001 among others. The sped-up soul sample technique he popularised — chipmunk soul — dominated East Coast rap production for several years. Roc-A-Fella were reluctant to let him rap at all, and the story of him having to fight for an artist deal at the label he was producing for is one he returned to repeatedly.
The album run
The College Dropout (2004), Late Registration (2005) and Graduation (2007) established him commercially. 808s & Heartbreak (2008), recorded after his mother's death and a broken engagement, was sung almost entirely through Auto-Tune and was poorly received at the time; it is now regarded as one of the most influential rap records ever made, and the melodic style that dominates the genre today descends directly from it. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) is the one most often named as his best. Yeezus (2013), The Life of Pablo (2016), ye (2018), Jesus Is King (2019) and Donda (2021) followed.
Notable songs
"Jesus Walks", "Gold Digger", "Stronger", "Runaway", "Power", "All of the Lights", "Ultralight Beam" and "Heartless".
What he is known for musically
Arrangement and ambition rather than rapping technique. He is a good rapper and an exceptional producer, and his real skill is assembly — gathering collaborators, extracting their best work and structuring it into something none of them would have made alone. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had a credit list resembling a small orchestra and it does not sound crowded.
Fashion and business
Yeezy, his partnership with Adidas, became one of the most valuable footwear lines in the world and made him extraordinarily wealthy. He also worked with Nike, Louis Vuitton, Gap and Balenciaga at various points.
The 2022 collapse
In October 2022 he made a series of public antisemitic statements across social media, interviews and podcasts. The commercial response was immediate and near-total: Adidas ended the Yeezy partnership, Gap and Balenciaga cut ties, his talent agency dropped him, and his estimated net worth fell by billions within weeks. He has since made further statements in the same direction, including in his music. Several artists who had worked with him for two decades publicly distanced themselves.
Recent output
Vultures with Ty Dolla $ign arrived in 2024 as the duo ¥$, followed by Vultures 2. Distribution was difficult, streaming platforms handled the releases inconsistently, and the reception was shaped almost entirely by the surrounding context rather than the music.
Where his standing sits now
His production and his first decade of records remain foundational and are still cited by nearly everyone working. His public conduct since 2022 has made him commercially untouchable at the level he previously operated. Both things are true and the industry has not resolved how to hold them together.
The Roc-A-Fella years
He produced "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)", "Takeover" and "Heart of the City" for The Blueprint, along with work for Talib Kweli, Cam'ron, Ludacris and Alicia Keys. Roc-A-Fella kept him as a producer because the label did not believe a middle-class kid in a pink polo shirt could sell rap records to their audience. His near-fatal car crash in 2002, and the song he recorded with his jaw wired shut, became the origin story he used to force the issue.
Donda West
His mother died in 2007 following cosmetic surgery. Her death, arriving alongside the end of his engagement, produced 808s & Heartbreak and is the event most people who have followed his career point to when discussing everything that came after. He named his 2021 album and his Los Angeles school project after her.
Public conduct before 2022
The Taylor Swift interruption at the 2009 VMAs, the 2016 hospitalisation, the 2018 comments about slavery being a choice, and a 2020 presidential run were each treated at the time as isolated incidents. He disclosed a bipolar diagnosis in 2018. In retrospect the sequence reads more continuously than it did as it happened.
How the industry has handled it
There is no settled position. Streaming platforms have kept the back catalogue up. Producers and rappers continue to cite Late Registration and MBDTF as formative while declining to work with him. Retailers and brands have not returned. The question of what to do with the earlier work is one the culture has not answered, and this page does not attempt to answer it either — it records what happened.
