Wale

Olubowale Akintimehin is the most commercially successful rapper Washington DC has produced, has three number one albums, and has spent his career being discussed as underappreciated — a framing he has never disguised his frustration with.

Early life and origins

He was born in Washington DC to Nigerian parents and raised partly in Maryland. He played college football briefly before turning to music, and the Nigerian household and the DC go-go scene are the two things he returns to most in his writing.

Go-go and the early mixtapes

His early work incorporated go-go, the percussion-driven DC music built around live bands and long grooves, which no rapper had successfully exported. The Mixtape About Nothing in 2008, built around Seinfeld samples and with Jerry Seinfeld's cooperation, got him national attention and a Mark Ronson-brokered deal with Interscope.

Album discography

Attention Deficit (2009) underperformed and he left Interscope for Rick Ross's Maybach Music Group. Ambition (2011), The Gifted (2013), The Album About Nothing (2015), Shine (2017), Wow... That's Crazy (2019) and Folarin II (2021) followed. The Gifted, The Album About Nothing and Shine all reached number one.

Notable songs

"Lotus Flower Bomb", "Bad", "Ambitious Girl", "Chillin" with Lady Gaga, and "On Chill" with Jeremih.

What he is known for musically

Dense, reference-heavy writing delivered conversationally, often over soul or go-go-derived production. He writes about insecurity and professional resentment more openly than almost any rapper at his commercial level, which is both his most distinctive quality and the thing that has made him a difficult public figure to market.

Mental health

He has spoken at length about anxiety and depression, including in interviews at points when doing so carried real professional cost. That candour predates the current normalisation of the subject in rap by several years.

Nigerian heritage

He is the child of Nigerian immigrants and has consistently written about it, at a point when Afrobeats had not yet reached American radio and being visibly African in rap carried a social cost he has described. He has since collaborated with Nigerian artists and been claimed by a scene that did not exist commercially when he started.

The Seinfeld mixtapes

The Mixtape About Nothing (2008) and The Album About Nothing (2015) are both built around Seinfeld, with Jerry Seinfeld's participation on the second. The conceit is unusual enough that it has become the thing he is best known for outside his singles, and the 2015 album reached number one.

Maybach Music Group

Rick Ross signed him in 2011 after the Interscope deal ended badly. Ambition and The Gifted both came out through MMG, and the association gave him a commercial platform he had not had, at the cost of being positioned inside a label aesthetic that never quite fitted him.

Wrestling and outside interests

He is a serious professional wrestling enthusiast, has appeared on WWE programming, and hosts a podcast. Like the Seinfeld material, it is part of a public persona built on enthusiasms rather than posture — which is unusual in rap and has probably not helped him commercially.
