Skilla Baby
Trevon Gardner is among the most visible of Detroit's current generation, a 2024 XXL Freshman with a delivery so high-pitched and frantic that it functions as a signature.
Early life and origins in Detroit
He grew up on Detroit's east side and started releasing music in his late teens. The Detroit scene he entered — Sada Baby, Babyface Ray, Icewear Vezzo, Peezy, 42 Dugg — was already established, and he had to be distinctive to register in it.
Album discography
Push That Shit Out Skilla (2019), the Crack Music series beginning in 2020, Controversy (2023) with Tee Grizzley, We Eat the Most Reloaded, and The Price of Fame (2026).
Collaborations
He has recorded with Tee Grizzley, Sada Baby, Icewear Vezzo, Babyface Ray and Boldy James — effectively the entire Detroit roster — plus "Face Card" with Chris Brown and Bryson Tiller, which pushed him well outside the city's usual reach.
The 2025 shooting
He was shot and wounded in Michigan in May 2025. He recovered and has spoken about the period as a forced pause that reshaped what he wanted to make, which is the stated context for The Price of Fame.
What he is known for musically
Pitch and energy. His voice sits considerably higher than most rappers' and he delivers at a constant sprint, which makes him instantly identifiable on a feature. Underneath it the writing is more considered than the delivery suggests.
Recognition
The 2024 XXL Freshman Class placed him alongside That Mexican OT, BigXthaPlug and Cash Cobain, and marked the point at which Detroit's current wave was treated as a national story rather than a regional one.
Detroit's moment
The city has produced more nationally visible rappers in the last five years than at any point since Eminem, and the scene is unusually collaborative — the same names appear on each other's records constantly rather than competing for a single slot.
The Crack Music series
The mixtape series beginning in 2020 established him locally and ran across several volumes. Detroit's scene works on volume — frequent releases, constant features — and he matched that pace from the start.
Controversy with Tee Grizzley
The 2023 joint album with Tee Grizzley paired him with the city's most commercially established rapper and moved him from a local name to a national one. Joint albums are a standing Detroit habit and this was among the more successful.
Charity work
He has run repeated giveaway and community events in Detroit, including back-to-school and holiday drives, and has been publicly critical of artists who leave the city and do not return. It is a consistent theme in his interviews.
The Price of Fame
Recorded after the May 2025 shooting and his recovery, and framed by him as a deliberate attempt at something more considered than the material that preceded it. He has cited Tupac as the model for what he was reaching for, which is a large claim and at least an interesting one.
