Icewear Vezzo

Christopher Preyer has been central to Detroit rap for over a decade, as an artist, a label owner and the person who put a great many of the city's current names on their first records.

Early life and origins in Detroit

He grew up on Detroit's east side, memorising songs off the radio as a child — the first he learned was Jay-Z's "Jigga What" — and was rapping as Young Vez by sixteen. He changed the name after releasing Young Vez Presents Icewear Vol. 1.

The Clarity and the mixtape run

The Clarity arrived in 2012 and spawned a long series of sequels. That run established him regionally at a point when Detroit had almost no national profile, and it is the foundation everything since rests on.

Album discography

The Rich Off Pints series, running to Rich Off Pints 4 in 2026, plus Live from the 6, a large catalogue of collaborative projects, and a 2025 joint release with Peezy.

Iced Up Records

He runs his own label and has used it to release and platform other Detroit artists. His role as a connector — putting younger rappers on features, brokering collaborations — is a substantial part of why the scene coheres the way it does.

What he is known for musically

A choppy, stop-start flow over the sparse, off-kilter production that defines the Detroit sound. His delivery is conversational and slightly behind the beat, and the writing is street-level and specific.

Collaborations

Peezy, Skilla Baby, Babyface Ray, Sada Baby, Tee Grizzley and effectively everyone else in the city. "WaddupDoe" gathered most of them onto a single record, which is about as neat a summary of the scene as exists.

Standing in Detroit

He has never had a national hit and is nonetheless one of the two or three most important figures in the city's rap economy, which is a distinction the charts do not capture.

The Rich Off Pints series

The series has run to four volumes and is the spine of his catalogue. Each gathers a large number of Detroit collaborators, which is part of why the records function as scene documents as much as solo albums.

Incarceration

He served a federal sentence that interrupted his career, and returned to find the Detroit scene he had helped build considerably larger than when he left. He has written about the gap directly.

Putting others on

Artists across the current Detroit generation have credited him with early features, studio access or introductions. In a scene with no major label infrastructure, that connective work is what allows a local movement to function, and he has done more of it than anyone.

The Detroit sound

Sparse, slightly detuned production, drums that sit oddly against the vocal, and a conversational delivery that lands just behind the beat. It is one of the few genuinely regional rap sounds to emerge in the streaming era, and he is one of its principal architects.
