Ice-T
Tracy Marrow was making West Coast rap records before there was a West Coast rap scene to speak of, spent the early 1990s at the centre of a national censorship fight, and has since spent longer playing a detective on network television than he did as a full-time rapper.
Early life and origins
Marrow was born in Newark, New Jersey, and moved to Los Angeles as a child after both parents died. He served in the Army, then began recording in the early 1980s, taking his name from the author Iceberg Slim, whose pimp narratives he could recite at length and whose storytelling shaped his writing.
Early career and Rhyme Pays
Rhyme Pays in 1987 was among the first West Coast rap albums to reach a national audience, and the first to carry an explicit content warning. Power and O.G. Original Gangster followed, the latter widely regarded as his best and the record that popularised the term. He also recorded "Colors" for the Dennis Hopper film, which put street-level Los Angeles narrative into mainstream cinema.
Body Count and the Cop Killer fight
He formed the metal band Body Count and released "Cop Killer" in 1992. The song triggered a national political campaign involving police organisations and the president, and he eventually pulled it from the album himself rather than let his label be pressured. It remains one of the defining free speech disputes in American music, and Body Count has continued releasing records since, winning a Grammy in 2021.
